All the above Northups and Abbeys came to Winneshiek Co. sometime between 1854 and 1857. The Northups settled in Glenwood Twp. They had 4 more children after coming to Winneshiek Co.: Fred (b. 25 Mar 1857); Charles (b. 21 Sep 1859); Alta (b. 11 Sep 1864); and Jessie (b. 25 Sep 1866). Thomas Northup and "Mispah" died between the 1850 and 1860 census. They were buried in the old Freeport Cemetery on the hill east of town - without any marker. Abraham Abbey (b. 1802 in New York) and Nancy L. (b. 1805) had 2 children: Minerva (b. 7 Oct 1829) and Marian (b. 16 May 1840). Both children were born in Cattaraugus Co. Nancy L. died before the June 1840 census. In 1845 Abraham married Elizabeth Jane Smith (b. 29 Mar 1821, New York). They had 4 children before coming to Iowa: William (b. 1845); Thomas (b. 9 Mar 1847); LeRoy (b. 1849); and Selma Jane (b. 1854). Four more were children were born in Freeport: Charles (b. 1857); Edward (b. 14 Jul 1860); Hattie (b. 1862); and Abraham L. (b. 1863). They moved to Hancock Co., IA where they both died. Abraham died between 1863 and 1870. Elizabeth died 16 Jan 1889. Both are buried in the Ellington Twp. Cemetery. Dr. Frederick Northup and Minerva also moved to Hancock Co. where Minerva died 8 May 1885. Dr. Northup was murdered 12 Apr 1886. Both are buried in the Ellington Twp. Cemetery. Their daughter Nancy "Loraine” went by her middle name. Loraine was a teacher. She married Aaron Monroe Sheetz at the close of the Civil War. Aaron said he “got her before the boys came home from the war and took her away from him”. (Also see Sheetz) Novak, Anton and Anna (Pecinovsky)(Cyril & Rebecca Neuzil) Anton Novak was born 17 Jan 1863 to Martin and Frances Vondra (Sbiral) Novak. On 9 Feb 1885 he married Anna Pecinovsky. Anna was born 12 Apr 1863 to John and Frances (Chyle) Pecinovsky. Anton had one sister Frances and 3 brothers: Matthew, Gustal and Thomas. Anna had 5 brothers: John, Anton, Ludwig, Thomas and Frank. Anton and Anna Novak and family about 1906. Anton and Anna farmed on a farm in Winneshiek Co., Sumner Twp., Section 7 and were parents of 8 children. One daughter died in infancy. Their surviving children were: Joseph, Agnes, William, Edward, Lewis J., Eleanor and Christina. Anton and Anna lived all their married life on the farm, staying with their son Lewis after he married in 1924. Anna died of cancer 11 Nov 1934 and Anton died 9 Jul 1943. Both are buried in the first chapel on the Holy Trinity Cemetery in Protivin. Joseph (b. 31 Dec 1885) married Celia Frana 19 Sep 1922. They farmed until they retired to Decorah. Celia was born 2 Apr 1904 and died 5 Aug 1994. Joseph died 23 Dec 1963. Both are buried at St. Benedict’s Cemetery at Decorah. Agnes Elizabeth (b. 6 Jan 1888) married 26 Oct 1926 to John Korbel, son of Frank and Veronica (Kubesh) Korbel of Calmar. Agnes and John farmed near Calmar and had 2 children: Wenceslaus John ’Jim" (m. Marlene Martinson) and Agnes (m. Robert Marks). Agnes Elizabeth died 25 Nov 1963 and is buried in the St. Aloysius Cemetery in Calmar. William (b. 17 Mar 1891 on his parents’ farm) farmed on his 130 acre farm just up the road from his parents. William died suddenly 30 Apr 1934. Edward A. (b. 15 Jul 1895) married Lillian (Ludmilla) Neuzil 26 Apr 1921. Lillian was the daughter of Frank and Sophia (Frana) Neuzil. They farmed in Howard Co. and had 4 children: Eddie (m. Agnes Lipa); Mary (m. Arthur Phillips); Mildred (m. Alois Hrdicka); and Tony (m. Gladys Zobeck). Edward A. died 24 Feb 1983 and is buried at Our Lady of Lourdes Cemetery in Lourdes, IA. Lewis J. (b. 12 Aug 1897) married Annie Frana 25 Nov 1924. Annie was born 24 Dec 1906 to Albert W. and Mary K. (Humpal) Frana. They farmed in Winneshiek Co., Sumner Twp., Section 7 and had 3 children: Eugene (m. Gertrude Bohr); Andrew (m. Abbie Pecinovsky); and Elizabeth “Betty” (m. Tom Seaver). Lewis died 24 Aug 1984 and is buried in the Holy Trinity Cemetery in Protivin, IA. Eleanora M. (b. 5 Sep 1899) married John Neuzil 26 Apr 1921. John was born 6 Sep 1896 to Frank and Sophia (Frana) Neuzil. Eleanora and John farmed in Winneshiek Co., Sumner Twp., Section 26 and had 7 children: Frank E. (m. Marlyse M. Jirak); August A. (m. Dorothy Ondrashek); Lewis C. (m. Grace Wagner Moudry); Anthony C. (m. Victoria Lujan): Eleanor J. (m. Melvin Jirak); Justina V. (m. John Curtiss Crabtree); and Cyril J. (m. Rebecca C. Pecinovsky). Eleanora died 28 May 1982 and is buried in the St. Wenceslaus Cemetery in Spillville, la. Christina A. (b. 11 May 1904) married Lewis F. Malek. Christina and Lewis farmed in Howard Co. and had 2 children: Ben and Mathilda. Ben remained single and Mathilda married Reuben Praska. Christina died 7 May 1984 and is buried in the Calvary Cemetery in Cresco, IA. Novak, Benjamin and Stella (Klimesh)(Rebecca Neuzil) Benjamin A. Novak was born 19 Jan 1892 on a farm east of Spillville, the youngest of 10 children of Joseph P and Anna (Bouska) Novak. Benjamin served in the Army during World War I.
